The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Kelly P. Kissel | Metro editor

Thanks for stopping in today to check in Baton Rouge's latest headlines. Here we go.

Dr. Mom

When you're a mom and a doctor, life can be interesting. The physician-in-chief at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center visited with the Baton Rouge Press Club yesterday and recalled the brief prayer she said before having her children vaccinated against the coronavirus.

"I said, 'Oh dear Lord, please let them be healthy after this vaccination because if not, I will feel so bad,'" she said.

Blake Paterson has the rest of the story.

My tax bill is different. What's up?

Tax bills are hot of the press and in the hands of East Baton Rouge property owners. Some area agencies raised taxes slightly during the year, but there are some taxes that are gone altogether. We have a pair of stories looking at payments due by the end of the year.

The first explains why the numbers are likely different this year.

The second shows how to determine what the city-parish thinks your property is worth.

A few bad apples

Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul had another news conference yesterday to talk about the city's recent spike in crimes. (Yes, he's had several of these in the last couple of years.)

In his latest, we learned that eight people were in a car that was targeted in a drive-by shooting last week, and that four of them were kids age 6 or below. Two people in the car died.

Paul also said it appears that many of the same people are responsible for the crimes, and that problems could largely be traced to a 9-square-mile area of the city. Caroline Savoie explores.
