When Abbott Laboratories announced a made-in-Maine coronavirus test kit last week that could produce results in minutes rather than days, excitement rippled across a nation strapped by too many patients, too few testing supplies and slow results.
An estimated 61,000 Maine jobs could be lost by the summer as the new coronavirus drags the country into a recession, according to a new analysis from the liberal Maine Center for Economic Policy and the Economic Policy Institute.
The sudden change is affecting restaurant workers and owners, even those who’ve made the pivot to offering takeout service.
