The Saints went from one of the franchise’s most exciting rallies to most deflating defeats in the matter of a few minutes Sunday afternoon at the Caesars Superdome. The Falcons headed back to Atlanta with a 27-25 victory on a last-second field goal, allowing them to get back in the playoff mix and take some air of the Saints’ tires following a big win over the first-place Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s amazing the Saints had a chance to win at all following several drops by the receivers in the first half and a strip-sack touchdown by the Falcons in the second half. It appeared early that the Saints would pile up rushing yardage in the first half, but the passing game struggled to get going early as nearly every receiver seemed to have a drop through the first three quarters. As the Falcons continue to gradually build a lead, that put pressure on Saints QB Trevor Siemian to lead the way on offense. It’s hard to put much blame on him aside from the one lost fumble. Most of his passes were on target, but his receivers failed to follow through with the catch on several occasions. Siemian completed 25 of 41 passes for 249 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, leading the Saints back to a 25-24 lead with 1:01 remaining. Would the Saints have won if they were operating with a healthy Jameis Winston? Probably. However, Siemian has proven himself capable of running the show. Whether Taysom Hill gets a shot to start remains to be seen. At this point, the Saints’ biggest problems on offense don’t appear to be at the quarterback position. There has to be more consistency at receiver if the Saints are going to hang each week with teams that feature veteran QBs like Tom Brady and Matt Ryan. Enjoy your Monday, Patrick Magee |
