England’s so-called ‘Freedom Day’ has finally arrived but Covid cases are on the rise across the city and the country.
View email online | | | | | Jul 20, 2021 | | | | | | Good evening The sense of optimism the country was feeling just a few weeks ago is disappearing pretty quickly at the moment. A couple of weeks ago, we were in the middle of Euro madness and still believed England might be crowned champions; we could see ‘Freedom Day’ in the distance and even the weather was starting to improve. Now the number of Covid cases is just under 50,000 a day, 96 people died of the virus yesterday and at least one of our local hospitals is now struggling to cope with the number of people in critical care. And while the law surrounding the wearing of face masks, social distancing and meeting up indoors has been scrapped, we are still being told to ‘proceed with caution’, particularly in Lancashire, where figures are still higher than the national average. I understand why the Prime Minister felt he had to remove most of the restrictions - otherwise we would be living under them until next Spring. But I fear, like some of our senior medics, that we are heading down a rabbit hole once again. Let’s hope I’m wrong.
