FAKE FILINGS: It's bad enough that more people are being carjacked in New Orleans than at any time in the past decade. But some people taking advantage of the scourge, falsely reporting carjackings in which they were the victims, police say.
CONTRABAND CARGO: Federal inspectors suspected something was wrong when they boarded the 590-foot cargo ship Pan Jasmine just down the Mississippi River from New Orleans: Wood that had been used to secure a load of aluminum was stacked on the deck, and no one could explain why it had not been offloaded with the aluminum during an earlier stop in Veracruz, Mexico.
Turns out the wood was infested with a tree-killing beetle that could have caused "incalculable damage," as well as with invasive ants. They ordered the ship out of U.S. waters.
