| | | | How're you handling in-person events? Happy hump day, Baltimore. Here's a quandary for those of you trying to organize events for your company (or, honestly, yourselves). Since we pride ourselves on knowing our scenes as well as possible, I've been going to a steadily increasing number of demo days, coffee meetings and other in-person events in the months since I started here. Those events' organizers have largely adhered to the state and city's best COVID-19 prevention practices, with precautions like checking vaccination status, clarifying comfort levels around masking and limiting RSVPs. I usually find that people are comfortable going maskless in these settings, although there's none of the so-called "mask shaming" we've seen in other parts of the country. But the comfort people feel going maskless seems at odds with, as Johns Hopkins-based public health specialist described to The Baltimore Sun yesterday, a current surge in COVID-19 rates around the country. While I don't doubt the local tech ecosystem's faith in public health protocols, I do occasionally wonder if our rush to have some much-needed community feel risks exposing more of us to new variants and perpetuating a surge. And I wonder if any of you feel the same. So, I ask you: How are you handling either attending or organizing in-person convenings? Does the current surge worry you enough to change how you do things?
