Even an off night by Angel Reese's amazing standards Monday was good enough for a record-breaking night for the LSU women's basketball standout. The sophomore forward had 14 points and 14 rebounds, below her season averages going in of more than 25 points and 15 rebounds per game. But those numbers further illustrate the greatness with which Reese has been playing this season, as she recorded her LSU single-season record breaking 20th straight double-double in LSU's 89-51 romp at Alabama. Afterward the player whose record Reese broke, Sylvia Fowles, sent her a video message of congratulations. As Reese herself recently said, being mentioned in the same breath as Fowles, not only an all-time LSU great but one of the greatest centers ever to play the women's game, was honor enough. Now Reese and the Tigers (20-0, 8-0 SEC) get a week off before hosting Tennessee (16-6, 8-0) next Monday in the PMAC. The Tigers and Lady Vols are tied for first in the SEC with No. 1 South Carolina. By the way, LSU dropped one spot to No. 4 in this week's AP poll, but is likely to bounce back up next week after No. 2 Ohio State lost at home to No. 10 Iowa. Ohio State's loss leaves LSU and South Carolina as the only unbeatens left in the women's game. They meet Feb. 12 in Columbia, S.C. For the first time since Fowles' played, the LSU women's team is being considered a national championship contender. For LSU baseball, the expectation is to win the national title every year. This season, as virtually every major poll has the Tigers pegged as the preseason No. 1, second-year coach Jay Johnson is embracing the enormous pressure to win it all for the first time since 2009. LSU men's basketball isn't going to win the national championship in year one under coach Matt McMahon. Just winning another game would be nice at this point for the Tigers. Tuesday, LSU returns to the scene of the sublime, so to speak, as it travels to face another struggling team in Arkansas. The Razorbacks (13-6, 2-5 SEC) and Tigers (12-7, 1-6) have been floundering pretty much the same way since LSU beat Arkansas 60-57 on Dec. 28 to open SEC play. Finally, LSU gymnastics is also at Arkansas on Friday night. The Tigers, despite a 1-3 record, are up to No. 8 in the nation because of their scoring average after back-to-back scores over the coveted 197 mark against Oklahoma and Missouri. It's difficult for some fans to grasp, but winning and losing in the regular season aren't the be all, end all in gymnastics. Right now, the Tigers are in building mode for the future and trying to cope with being without three contributing gymnasts: Kiya Johnson (out for the season, Achilles' tendon), Olivia Dunne (shin) and Bryce Wilson (head injury). Enjoy your sports Tuesday, Tiger fans. Scott Rabalais |
