| Good morning. Welcome to your week and your Capitol View.. Aug. 11 is primary Election Day in Minnesota, but early voting began late last month. This year’s contests feature two interesting intraparty congressional battles — one Republican primary in rural Minnesota, the other a Democratic primary in the heart of Minneapolis. MPR News reporter Mark Zdechlik takes a closer look at the 5th, 7th District races. “State Sen. Scott Jensen, a physician and Republican from Chaska, said Sunday he is being investigated by the Minnesota State Board of Medical Practice for public statements he’s made about COVID-19. Jensen criticized the state Health Department in April for following federal guidance stipulating when doctors should characterize deaths as due to COVID-19," Mara Klecker reports for the Star Tribune, "He said he feared that the death toll might be inflated if each state’s allocation of federal funds depended on the number of COVID-19 deaths. … In the video, he said the board is focused on two allegations: spreading misinformation about the death toll and providing 'reckless advice' by comparing COVID-19 with the flu.” Over the holiday weekend, President Trump warned of an attempt to erase American history and values. But other factors are likely to play a bigger role in his reelection effort. NPR's Dominico Martinaro rounds up 6 key challenges facing Trump's re-election effort: 58 percent — Trump's record disapproval87 percent — of Americans are dissatisfied with the direction of the country56 percent — Trump's (mis)handling of the coronavirus67 percent — Say Trump is making racial tensions worse47 percent — People who think Trump is handling the economy well has dropped below 50 percent 35 percent — Trump's suburban support has eroded "Overall, these numbers aren't great for Trump. One saving grace is that his supporters love him — and intensely so. His base is more enthusiastic about voting for him than potential Biden voters are for voting for the former vice president, and that's a wildcard to watch. But while enthusiasm is important, it doesn't always translate into more votes . Reelections, after all, are always about the sitting president. Trump may wind up driving out his base, but also Democrats in opposition to him." NBC News reports on |
