THE BIG STORY
Administration officials believe DNA collection from those who are detained will aid border officials in better assessing the individuals who cross into the country without authorization.
But the move will anger civil liberties proponents and immigrant advocates, who argue that the government should not draw sensitive personal information from people without being tied to a specific crime. The proposed regulation does not take effect immediately; there will be 20 days for the public to provide comments.
It's the latest plan by an administration that's so known for being hostile to immigrants that there is a conversation about whether to allow its enablers back into civil society. On Monday, singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile announced she is boycotting an upcoming conference celebrating powerful women, citing the involvement of former secretary of homeland security Kirstjen Nielsen, who oversaw the Trump administration’s separation of immigrant families at the US border.
Meanwhile, Google has hired Nielsen's former chief of staff Miles Taylor, who once defended a "tough" but "tailored" version of Trump's controversial travel ban, as a government affairs and public policy manager.
