People with high-functioning anxiety show an outward picture of being able to handle life's stresses but inwardly are feeling severe distress from the constant drain on their emotional energy, according to Today. To help reduce that anxiety, Lynn Bufka, Ph.D., recommends recognizing situations when perfection isn't necessary and digging into anxieties to find out its root cause, which is usually unrealistic. Keith Kaufman, Ph.D., advises looking for healthier sources of motivation than anxiety, adding: "when you're anxious, you try to protect yourself from the threat of failure, and that takes away the energy you need to succeed."
