No Tech Hubs funding for Baltimore

Back in 2023, Baltimore was among the 31 US regions given official Tech Hubs designation under the CHIPS and Science Act. Last summer, Congress appropriated $541 million to go toward 12 of the hubs — and Baltimore was not one of them.

Fast forward to this week, when Congress allocated another $210M in Tech Hubs funding as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. Once again, Baltimore was left off the list.

But local leaders are still hopeful. The money allocated to specific hubs so far is just 10% of the total potential federal spend on the program.

“The Baltimore Region’s Tech Hub designation has created much-needed strategic alignment among the 48 regional institutions and organizations involved in our consortium, laying a strong foundation for competing successfully for game-changing ecosystem investments moving forward,” said Mark Anthony Thomas, CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee.

EcoMap reports $6.9M raise

One of the top five highest VC deals in the Baltimore region last quarter? The $6.9 million raise by EcoMap Technologies, a 2022 RealLIST Startups honoree building platforms to help startups and economic leaders navigate regional resources.

This round follows a $3.5 million seed in 2022, an equivalent investment in 2023 and a flurry of hiring in 2024. Also last year, EcoMap hosted its inaugural SuperConnect conference, a two-day economic development summit that also served as a tribute to the company’s late cofounder, Pava LaPere.
