Officials marked the 50th anniversary of the opening of the 18-mile-long Atchafalaya Basin Bridge during a cool and breezy gathering Tuesday at the Butte LaRose boat landing in St. Martin Parish. The elevated expressway is actually two parallel bridges, one for eastbound travel and one for westbound travel. Part of the east-to-west Interstate 10, the bridge cuts through the Atchafalaya Basin, the largest freshwater floodplain swamp in North America, providing a vital link between Lafayette and Baton Rouge.
