A sweet surprise: How to capture an escaped emu What do you do when a man-sized bird escapes your yard? You tempt it back with treats, of course! That’s how police managed to wrangle Kermit, an Australian emu who fled a Boston animal shelter while his caretaker was preparing to transport him. Once Kermit got out, he led authorities on a wild emu hunt through the city of Boston. As he grew more agitated, though, one officer had a bright idea: Attract him with bait. The officer managed to lure Kermit with a pear picked off a nearby tree. Now the emu is back home safe and sound. Why didn’t they think of that earlier?
