SUIT SETTLED: New Orleans has reached a $5.5 million settlement with John Floyd, who served 36 years in prison before his conviction for a French Quarter slaying was thrown out. Floyd, who has argued his confession came after he was beaten by New Orleans Police officers, was released in 2017 after a federal judge found that investigators had never followed up on fingerprint evidence that pointed to another possible suspect. John Simerman provides the details on Floyd's case. TAX BREAK SCRUTINY: State Rep. Stuart Bishop, R-Lafayette, is looking to trim the nearly $7 billion Louisiana gives away in tax breaks each year. Under a bill sponsored by Bishop, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, more than 100 tax breaks would be eliminated by 2027 unless the legislature specifically votes to reauthorize them. The bill is expected to face strong opposition. Tyler Bridges reports on Bishop's effort and provides an update on the status of other tax bills. GUNS AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: In February, a federal appeals court struck down a federal law barring those who have protective orders taken out against them from owning guns. That ruling has Louisiana advocates and law enforcement nervous about the future of a similar state law that they say is crucial to protecting victims of domestic violence. Megan Wyatt talked with the team of women working for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office about the law and their efforts to keep guns out of the hands of abusers.
