US benchmarks closed higher for the third session in a row on Thursday, with the Nasdaq gaining 1.4%. The S&P 500 gained 1.0%, while the Dow and the small-cap Russell 2K added 0.5% on the session. Today, futures are in the red in early morning trading. S&P 500 contracts are currently showing a 0.3% decline. HCA Healthcare [HCA] - Last Close: $181.31 HCA Healthcare is taking off after releasing its quarterly report. The healthcare services stock put out its Q2 earnings results early this morning, and it's getting a warm reception from investors. HCA Healthcare generated EPS of $3.90 per share on revenues of $14.82 billion in the second quarter, beating Wall Street's $14.73 billion target. However, HCA's EPS figure fell short of the Street's $3.59 per share target. The company's board also voted to maintain its quarterly cash dividend of $0.56 per share. HCA is one of the S&P 500's top-performing stocks with a 13.1% gain. Our Take: HCA could be a great long-term value play. Healthcare is a recession-resistant industry, and the stock's value ratios look very strong. American Express Co [AXP] - Last Close: $150.18 American Express is rallying after releasing its earnings report. The credit card company released its Q2 earnings results this morning and posted better-than-expected figures for earnings and revenues. American Express reported earnings of $2.57 per diluted share in Q2 to top analysts' $2.40 EPS target. Revenues of $13.4 billion also beat the Street's $12.54 target. American Express also raised its full-year revenue growth guidance in response to the unexpectedly resilient credit card spending it saw in the second quarter. The company now expects revenues to grow between 23% and 25% in 2022, marking a significant increase from its previous guidance of 18% to 20%. AMEX is one of today's top large-cap stocks with a 4.5% gain. Our Take: AXP could be on course to break out of its multiple-month downtrend thanks to its strong Q2 report. The stock currently has a P/E ratio of 15.04, and it's been gaining steadily after bottoming out at around $134 per share. Hanger Inc [HNGR] - Last Close: $14.75 Shares of Hanger Inc are skyrocketing on news of a buyout deal. The medical device firm announced this morning that it has agreed to be acquired by Patient Square Capital in a private deal worth approximately $1.25 billion. Under the terms of the all-cash deal, HNGR shareholders will receive $18.75 for each outstanding share of common stock. The bid represents a 27% premium to HNGR's Thursday closing price. The transaction is expected to close in Q4, and current Hanger CEO Vinit Asar will continue to lead the company. HNGR is up 25.1% on news of the buyout deal. Our Take: HNGR has all but closed the premium gap since the story broke, so it doesn't look like there's a lot of upside left in this one. DSS Inc [DSS] - Last Close: $0.37 DSS is surging after announcing a new licensing agreement. After Thursday's closing bell, the industrial conglomerate announced it had entered into a new license agreement with a ProPhase Labs subsidiary through its Global BioLife, Inc brand. The license agreement will give ProPhase BioPharma access to Global BioLife's Linebacker portfolio, which includes two patented small molecule inhibitors. The deal marks the second licensing deal between the two companies this year. DSS says it plans to work with ProPhase to continue developing the linebacker portfolio. DSS is up 14.1% on news of the licensing deal. Our Take:Both DSS and ProPhase are micro-cap stocks, so this isn't exactly a deal between to industry giants. Nonetheless, the cooperation could yield major benefits for the two small companies, but the market seems to think DSS is getting the better end of the deal. |
