Dear Do-It-Yourselfer, You don’t need to take an extravagant vacation to enjoy a getaway in paradise. You can bring the tropics to your patio with a DIY project sure to put some sunshine into your step. Wait. We know you’re thinking that lush, tropical plants and cool weather don’t work well together. Well, if you use planters, you can bring that verdant beauty into your home for the winter, then back outdoors when it warms up. Here’s how to get started. Identify an area that gets full sun and sketch out some ideas. Ideally, plan your personal paradise in an area with a heat-retaining surface, such as a wall. This will help to create a microclimate, and when you cover it with bamboo fencing, you won’t even know that it’s there. Your soil is going to be especially important here. Tropical plants are heavy feeders and thirsty, so opt for a rich soil mix that will retain moisture but also drain well. Once your soil is ready, get your plants in place. In cooler climates, it might be easier to keep them potted so that you can move them indoors during the winter. And what plants are these, exactly? Believe it or not, you could start with a banana tree. Musa basjoo can grow leaves nearly 6 feet long, and it’s happy in Zones 5 to 11. In colder areas, you can bring the tree indoors during the winter and keep it above freezing. Fatsia japonica can spend the winter indoors, too. Its big, glossy, green leaves inspire its nickname: “umbrella plant.” And, for dramatic effect, some Colocasia (aka “elephant ears”) produce velvety, nearly black foliage, which is great as a privacy screen. How about adding a ladder, nighttime illumination, or seating? Join The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club, and you can get all of the details in our annual Garden Guide. |

Small Pots, Small Plants | Have a DIY heart but don’t have the space to create a tropical getaway? Try kusamono, the Japanese art of small-pot planting. Kusamono, which means “grass thing,” was born of bonsai. Masters seeking bonsai plants in the wild collected small plants nearby, then potted and displayed them with the bonsai to provide natural context. However, as single plantings, kusamono can be stunning focal points, and their petite design makes them ideal for small living spaces. Practitioners of kusamono follow certain traditions. For instance, a kusamono usually contains just a few plants in odd numbers. A kusamono stands whole, not as the sum of its parts. Even so, it should complement its surroundings. If you display it with other objects, think about whether the plant and pot will enhance or detract from those items. Finally, your kusamono should reflect your personality. Get inspiration from other kusamono artists, but add your own flair to yours through an unconventional pairing or an unusually colored pot. | | All Plant, No Pot | If you use up all of your fun pots for your patio paradise or kusamono project, we have one fun DIY project that’s pure plant. Herbs, to be exact. This aromatic and tasty living herbal wreath is a simple way to keep fresh culinary herbs around your home and on your menu. To make this wreath, you’ll need some of your favorite herbs, along with moss, twine, a wire wreath frame, and a few odds and ends. Herbs with shallow roots and a low-growth pattern—such as thyme, marjoram, tarragon, creeping rosemary, and creeping mint—are good choices. Of course, the best part about this wreath is that for about 2 hours of project time, you’ll get a weekly supply of herbs for cooking. And it smells heavenly. Get step-by-step instructions on how to make your own wreath, plus a bounty of useful information, wit, and wisdom, along with a big bundle of BONUSES, with your Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club Membership! We’re holding a brand-new, full-color copy of The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Guide for you, along with the 2020 Gardening Calendar, the 2020 edition of the Almanac, and our monthly EXTRA! digital magazine with information about monthly gardening tasks and other content not found in the print edition. |
