Michigan is heating up this week |
Michigan is experiencing a wave of true summer temperatures this week with some days climbing into the 90s. If the warmer weather has you ready to enjoy the great outdoors, there's still time to sign up for the Port Oneida Run that covers three trails of Sleeping Bear Dunes on Aug. 2. For laid back activity that winds you through nature, head to Mackinac Island for a horse drawn carriage tour through the Mackinac State Historic Parks. The tours take about two hours and stops at five destinations around the island. |

3 things to know about Medicaid cuts and where Michigan could be most affected |
Michigan health officials say recent federal legislation could have significant effects on people’s ability to access health care. For Medicaid, the government-funded health insurance program, the recently passed "Big Beautiful Bill" will add work requirements and increased eligibility checks by the end of 2026. Public health and hospital officials have said the changes will lead to about $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid funding over the next decade. Here are three takeaways from MLive’s reporting last week regarding Medicaid enrollment and upcoming changes. Michigan has joined a coalition of 22 other states in filing a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration — this time for freezing funding to six after-school and summer education programs. The funds impacting Michigan total approximately $171 million, part of $6.8 billion in education grants frozen nationwide. In the running: Michigan Senator Sean McCann has announced he is running for U.S. Congress. |

A week filled with deep summer weather here in Michigan |
Feeling summery: Michigan is facing a full week of summer weather. Tuesday and Wednesday will be hot with temperatures reaching around 90 degrees. Friday will bring relief with more comfortable temperatures in the 70s following a cold front, before returning to summery conditions in the low 80s for the weekend. Heat dome: Much of our two-week weather model data is starting to show part of Michigan getting into another area of hotter-than-normal air. In the look of the late July heat we should have highs between 92 degrees and 95 degrees. At least the southern half of Lower Michigan could be far enough into the hot dome to our south. This would yield a few days to five days in a row of 90-degree-or-hotter afternoons. On the water: A group of bystanders rescued an 18-year-old from the water after a near-drowning incident, Ludington police said. The teen is receiving medical treatment and remains in critical but stable condition, police said. |

Woman accused of stabbing McDonald’s manager, mom of 6, held on $25 million bond |
"This is a family shattered": A woman who is accused of stabbing to death a McDonald’s manager and mother of six children is charged with murder. Jennifer Harris, 39, of Mt. Clemens, was stabbed to death on Thursday at a McDonald’s restaurant in Eastpointe. Afeni Badu Muhammad, 26, of Eastpointe, is accused of first-degree murder in Harris’ death. Harris, the restaurant manager, had sent Muhammad, an employee, home early. The defendant allegedly returned and stabbed Harris to death. No charges filed: Prosecutors won’t be issuing criminal charges after a Saginaw man died of a drug overdose in a northern Michigan jail cell the day after Christmas. Corrections officers on Dec. 26 found Arista G. Hunt, 43, unresponsive in his cell within the Iosco County Jail. Corrections officers and paramedics attempted to revive Hunt, to no avail. In recovery: Former Hudsonville football standout Ethan Carter is recovering after he was shot four times in Alabama. He was in Alabama for training, Hudsonville High School Football said on its Facebook page. He was shot in his head, neck, chest, hand and arm. He has committed to Davenport University and is expected to be able to return to play football. |

Michigan the first school with first-round picks in 4 major sports in same year |
Michigan athletics: The University of Michigan has become the first school ever to produce first-round draft picks in all four major professional sports leagues in the same year. With Mitch Voit's MLB first-round selection by the New York Mets on Sunday, Michigan completed the unprecedented feat that included Mason Graham (NFL), Danny Wolf (NBA), and Will Horcoff (NHL). Andrew Kahn reports this historic achievement reflects the university's commitment to excellence across all sports programs rather than specializing in just one. Tigers draft: The Detroit Tigers selected 21 players in the 2025 MLB Draft, including 13 pitchers and 8 hitters. Their top pick was high school shortstop Jordan Yost at #24 overall, while 11th-round selection River Hamilton could be a steal if they can sign the injured right-hander away from his LSU commitment, reports Jacob Richman. The Detroit Lions: The Detroit Lions enter training camp with a potentially game-changing wide receiver trio led by Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, who both topped 1,000 yards last season. Tim Patrick returns for his second year with the team and could be the X-factor Detroit missed after Josh Reynolds' departure. Kory Woods reports rookie Isaac TeSlaa brings elite athleticism to the mix as the Lions aim to build on back-to-back NFC North titles. |

River, lakefront and forested land among the 126 properties in DNR’s ‘surplus land’ auction |
Up for sale: State land will be up for sale next month ranging in size from under an acre to 200 acres. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is holding 11 ‘surplus land’ auctions from Aug. 1 to Sept. 5. The DNR is auctioning off land that has river frontage, lake frontage and forested acreage in both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The 126 properties for sale were deemed too limited for public use. A construction project in Emmet County is taking flight for a future of supporting and studying Michigan’s largest raptor and apex predator. The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa are building a sanctuary for bald eagles found sick and injured across a large swath of Michigan. Appealing funding cuts: Southeast Michigan farmers with plans to protect their land from future development remain in limbo as a regional land conservation program appeals the loss of $24.6 million in promised federal funding. |
