It was a losing weekend for the majority of Michigan's sports teams. Starting off on Friday, Michigan State suffered a 31-10 loss at Oregon. The next day, Michigan fell to Washington 27-17 at Husky Stadium. Here's what was overheard outside the locker room. The Detroit Red Wings wrapped up the preseason Saturday with a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena. In Game 1 of the American League Division Series, the Cleveland Guardians scored five runs in the first inning and the Detroit Tigers never mounted a response, resulting in a 7-0 loss. Speaking of baseball, the Savannah Bananas’ Party Animals will be in West Michigan next year at the Whitecaps stadium. |

| 3 Michigan cities among most competitive rental markets in the country |
To know: It’s getting increasingly difficult for renters to secure housing in Michigan, as the state has some of the tightest rental markets in the United States. Grand Rapids, Detroit and Lansing-Ann Arbor were all recently listed among the 20 most competitive rental markets by RentCafe, “showcasing the state’s rising popularity among renters.” Sparking controversy: As new proposals to open wooded, local roads to side-by-sides and ATVs emerge, so has pushback from environmental groups and state land managers, making the Jordan Valley the latest of Michigan’s off-road vehicle battlegrounds. In business: The craft beer brewing industry lost a pioneer with the recent death of Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales founder Ron Jeffries. |

Change: 10 Michigan schools, districts and colleges across the state received more than $480,000 in funds from the Native American Heritage Fund to rebrand racially insensitive mascots and improve school curriculum. Out-of-staters surpass Michiganders: Michiganders have become a lower percentage of the total University of Michigan student body during the last decade, university data shows. Plus, three University of Michigan freshmen pursue health care at the same school that saved them. An update: After months of negotiations, Western Michigan University has reached a tentative agreement with the WMU professors’ union. |

Results: A majority of readers surveyed by MLive said they will tip less if servers make minimum wage and won’t go out to eat as often if restaurant prices rise. MLive conducted the unscientific survey drawing nearly 130 responses ahead of significant pay increases starting February for tipped workers and minimum wage earners. Bay City man told police he strangled man he met on Grindr, then dismembered him |
Justie T. Stilwell left his Bay City home one September night to meet up with a man he knew through a dating app. He then disappeared, failing to show up for work at a local middle school. The mystery took a horrendous turn when Stilwell’s arms and legs were found floating in the Saginaw River. Within days, police developed a suspect. When they confronted their suspect, he confessed to killing and dismembering Stilwell, then discarding his body parts at different locations in the city, according to police. Going away: A man is heading to federal prison after he supplied machine guns and gun conversion devices to gang members in Lansing. Another headline in crime: Michigan woman dies after 94-year-old drove car over her, police say. |

This self-guided tour in Manistee County showcases marvels of engineering against natural backdrops – it’s the perfect upgrade to an Up North fall color tour. Manistee Tourism put together this route with eight bridges, 2 dams and a weir. Covering 75 miles from the city of Manistee, at the county’s southwest corner, to Marilla, in the northeast corner, the Bridge & Dam Tour takes three to four hours, according to the tourism agency. Spooky fun awaits: Halloween at Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad is back this October with its annual Ghosts & Goodies event. Guests can enjoy 20 treat stops, a straw maze, and a magic show at the Colwell Opera House, all included with admission. The highlight is the 40-minute Huckleberry Ghost Train ride through the autumn countryside. Crikey: An alligator was found under a car in a residential driveway Thursday morning in Sterling Heights, WXYZ Detroit reports. |
