HRF Donates 2 Billion Satoshis To 10 Global Bitcoin Projects
By BtcCasey

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) has donated 2 billion satoshis (approximately $475,000) to support 10 global Bitcoin projects.

The projects aim to promote censorship-resistant communication, Bitcoin education in authoritarian regimes, core development, building local communities and education, with a focus on Africa and Southeast Asia.

Some of the grants include funding for a fellowship program, a Bitcoin conference in Africa, a decentralized social network platform, and raising awareness of Bitcoin for disadvantaged communities.

HRF has allocated over $2.2 million to more than 70 developers, educators, and open-source initiatives worldwide since early 2020. The organization aims to continue to raise support for the Bitcoin Development Fund, with the next round of gifts to be announced in May 2023.

Bitcoin Core Maintainer Marco Falke Announces His Intent To Step Down
By BtcCasey

Bitcoin Core maintainer Marco Falke has announced his decision to step down from the role.

Falke, who merged more changes into the Bitcoin Core code than any other person, stated in a tweet that being a maintainer is no longer a good fit for him personally, and thanked his sponsors, including Okcoin and Paradigm.

Falke's contributions around testing infrastructure have been the most substantive, which he identified early on as an inefficiency in the project. With Falke's departure, there will now be only four official Bitcoin Core maintainers. It's important to note that these maintainers do not officially control Bitcoin, and users running full nodes must opt-in to the code changes that they approve.

Reviewing The Best Bitcoin Lightning Wallets For Slow-Internet Regions
By Anita Posch

Anita Posch, the founder of Bitcoin For Fairness, believes that financial sovereignty can only be achieved by holding bitcoin in self custody and using additional tools to reach a decent level of privacy.

She conducted a Lightning wallet test in rural Zimbabwe with low and erratic internet connectivity on mobile data to find out the best non-custodial Lightning wallet for areas with slow internet. She believes that people should be educated about self custody and the risks of using custodial services before being introduced to non-custodial tools.

She argues that rushing people to use convenient tools is short-sighted and that everyone who is using Bitcoin today will need to change wallets and services in the future. Posch recommends a non-custodial Lightning wallet after testing Phoenix and Breez in an area with bad internet connectivity.
