From Small Workshop to Global Player ZEISS Company History |
Founded in 1846 by university mechanic Carl Zeiss as a small lens workshop in Jena, ZEISS is now one of the world’s leading optical and precision engineering companies. The company’s history is a reflection of German history with all its highs and lows – and is a prime example and pioneer of successful entrepreneurship. |

Part 1 + 2: Company history |
From the beginning of the production of individual microscopes by Carl Zeiss himself, through the association with physicist Ernst Abbe and glass chemist Otto Schott, and the patent application "double telescope with enlarged objective stand", the basis of binocular design as we know it today was created. Read more about the beginnings of ZEISS in the first part of the historical article series. |

World War I, the global financial crisis, and World War II were years of ups and downs. When Germany was divided after the war, the world-famous ZEISS factory in Jena also became two companies. Confrontation, coexistence, and finally reunification of the two unequal companies followed. In the second part, read all about the ZEISS Chronicle of the 20th Century, which reflects German history and highlights the pioneering developments in optics. |
