The New York social scene has changed a bit since the Gilded Age height of Fifth Avenue mansions, when the Astors, Rockefellers, Whitneys, and Vanderbilts reigned supreme. Wives were expected to give dinner parties; daughters, to find husbands (and then give dinner parties). These days, of course, the upper crust are still seen out and about, but the women who married or were born into it are hardly spending their days eating tea sandwiches at the Plaza. These modern socialites-about-town (yes, including a Rockefeller) have branched out with entrepreneurial acumen all their own.
