I hope you’ve got a hearty appetite for quality hoops coverage because today’s Hoops HQ playbook is loaded. Among our subjects are two colleagues who I have known for a long time. The first is Ken Pomeroy, the maven behind the KenPom.com analytics site. I’ve known Ken for many years and I’m frequently in touch with him during the season. If he tires of asking my questions, he doesn’t let on, and he’s really good at dumbing down his answers. I rang him up last week, interviewed him at length and wrote the story of how he created the force of nature that is KenPom.

The second colleague featured today is Doug Gottlieb, the head coach at Green Bay. Doug and I worked for many years at CBS and we have remained close friends. When Hoops HQ launched, I asked if he would write a recurring first-person diary for us. He said yes. When I saw the news last week that he benched his best player (not to mention the nation’s leading scorer), I wondered if he’d be willing to tell the story from the inside. He didn’t hesitate, which was not surprising. I’m sure you’ll find his diary entry compelling.

We’ve got plenty more for you enjoy, from the breaking news that the nation’s top high school recruit, A.J. Dybantsa, gave his commitment to BYU, to a look at the Top 10 breakout scorers so far this season. You should know, by the way, that the week’s biggest game takes place tomorrow night, when the UConn women play at Notre Dame. Paige Bueckers vs. Hannah Hidalgo? Yeah, I’ll be canceling my plans (not that I tend to make plans during basketball season).

Happy reading and happy hooping. As KenPom would say, read efficiently! —Seth

Ken Pomeroy Crunched the Numbers and Changed the Game

On top of describing himself as “super boring,” Ken Pomeroy confesses that he’s terrible at long-range planning. He cites, for example, his decision to major in civil engineering in college, only to pivot after graduation to meteorology. “I was just interested in the weather,” he says. “I kind of like predicting things.”

Pomeroy could hardly have forecast where the winds of change would propel him. Against all odds, without any plans, this mild-mannered 51-year-old bachelor has taken the college basketball world by storm. In that world he’s not Ken Pomeroy but rather a superhero named KenPom, the eponymous founder, owner, operator, coder, numbers cruncher and designer of KenPom.com, the sport’s premier analytics website. The site’s impact is so profound that the moniker “KenPom” has become embedded in the sport’s vernacular. If you’re a true college basketball fan, you know exactly what it means.

Colgate @ No. 5 Kentucky: This one is not likely to be close (Colgate is just 2-8 on the season), but we're game to watch Mark Pope's squad any chance we get. Kentucky jumped to No. 2 in Hoops HQ Top 25 this week and is currently the top scoring team in college basketball (92.6 points per game). 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
